Content Organizer is one the new cool features in SharePoint 2010 for Enterprise content management.  It allows organizations to control how content is organized within their enterprise portal.

Administrators can define routing rules based on the document’s metadata.  They are given the option to Send the document to another site, create a new folder, or redirect users to a Drop Off library.  They can also maintain the audit trails for the document before its being routed or create a new version for an existing document.

There are some key limitations worth noting:

• Only works on content types based on the Document content type.
• Works on the Site collection Document content type.  Not on a modified version of the content type on a specific document library.
